ZBrush file cannot be opened, causes program to crash.

I’ve had ZBrush for a little while, I’m new to the program but it was easy for me to gain a good understanding of it and start working on complex projects. I’m working on a character model in Zbrush 4r4, it’s very detailed but not so high in polygons that it causes any kind of performance issues with the software. I’ve modeled it, posed it with transpose master and modeled some simple cloth and added extra subtools that don’t take up much memory.
But now I can’t access the file anymore, when I open it Zbrush takes over a minute to load and when it does I get these errors in this order:

“Out of disk space.
Virtual memory file can’t be used until more disk space is made available.”

After I close that window these errors pop up one after the other in their own windows:

“Error while reading: (each line of text has its own window)

After I close these error windows ZBrush crashes and Windows will inform me that I must close the program.

I’ve tried running ZBrush as an administrator and increasing the amount of memory available for ZBrush but neither tricks work.

Here are my system specs:

Dell XPS 63-I
Windows 7
32-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 2.83 GHz
4GB of RAM
Dual ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Graphics cards

I’m not sure what to do at this point, do I reinstall ZBrush or is it the file? Do I not have enough memory? Have I corrupted the file in some way? I’ve put so much effort into this latest model that it would be really infuriating to have to go back and redo half the project. :banghead:

My first action would be to clear up some space on your primary hard drive and try to load the file again.

As ZBrush is currently a 32-bit application (limited to usage of 4GB RAM at best) you will find having “virtual space” is a necessity for work of any complexity.

On top of this I see that your system has a total of 4GB RAM so this means ZB will have to share this memory with the operating system plus any other applications you may have running. This is where virtual memory comes into play.

Clean up your drive and ZBrush should run better.

I have plenty of space on my hard drive, I’m not sure why it could be a memory issue. My biggest concern besides that are the error messages that pop up. I don’t know why ZBrush would give me these kinds of errors, nor what could have caused them.

Perhaps you could try updating to ZBrush 4R6. There is a chance that you are experiencing a bug that has been resolved in the latest build.

Also you may have better luck finding technical support in the forums of ZBrush Central.

Good luck.
