Yet another Final Fantasy Thread...

#1

this is my first actual head. and here’s the current image of what i’m working with:

As you can see, im not done, but eventually this will be a full head of hair. But anyways, im trying to get a final fantasy-type look. im going for alpha texured hair. so anyway, i have absolutely NO experience with creating textures, especially the kind needed for hair. (i use GIMP btw)
so basically, my question would be how to create the actual textures in GIMP. i’ve heard the terms alpha texture (i know what it is, just not how to accomplish it), spec map, and normal maps. Someone please help me out. Im trying to get something similar to this picture:

if you have any texture images that you’ve used for one of your own models (with alpha hair) please post them and explain how the texture was created.
it would be much appreciate.
Thanx =]

thanks.
this seems basic, but i will definately try this out.
it seems to lack the “depth” aspect (i guess normals)
what is it about final fantasy hair tht gives it tht particular look?

this says : “This tutorial shows the possibility of creating complex structures such as hair with Inkscape.”

does this only work with inkscape or is it a general technique that can be applie in blender. If it can be applied in blender, how would that be accomplished?
(sorry if i sound newbish, i dont know much about texturing at all)

P.S.
Anyone have any pics of some alpha hair textures that you’ve used on some previous projects that you would’nt mind posting? D:
