So uh…
seen any good movies lately?
Yes, movies that inspire you!!!
Un chien andalou I am not a fan of surrealism, but Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali teamed up to make this fantastic 1929 silent gem of ultra-creepiness. It inspires the “loose ends” of my mind.
Haxan This 1922 witchcraft “documentary” classic opened a realm within me of how beautiful the era’s special effects were. This film, since first viewing it years ago as a young child on PBS, has influenced my “underworld” pieces.
Donnie Darko
Butterfly Effect
Fight Club These three films (just to list the top three) have attached themselves within my heart and psyche due to their eerie similiarities to my life and/or beliefs. I watch them to get my mind focused on a path of what it is that I should be creating. I guess you can say they are my Lithium on celluloid, even though the films are far from being slow-paced.
This list can go on and on. But, let’s cut it to just these so we can jumpstart this thread back up. ![]()
Hey Haxan seems like a movie to see in the near future. I saw Un Chien Andalou, the opening scene grossed me out to be honest. Yuch… :hmm:
Just be sure you view Haxan and not Witchcraft Thru the Ages, which is narrated by William S. Burroughs and has a cheesy score, typical for the jazzy 1968 time. I viewed that when it played on PBS the second time around (early eighties?) and it made me cringe. I now have the Criterion print which has both cuts. If you can get your hands on the Criterion at a viddy store, I say grab it.
They fixed it up pretty damn well.
Criterion has a lot of great dvd releases I found. Most classics or historically important movies I saw on one of their DVD’s. A browse through their catalogue would be an interesting starting point for anyone interested in the history of film btw.
Thanks Manifestant.

Good call. The only anime that I truly love and has a terrific inspiring storyline. One of the best toons (that’s not a musical) that I’ve ever seen.
recently i liked gits “innocence” as a source of inspiration. not really comparable to the first one as a whole, but beautiful imagery and music. the character designs in corpse bride were awesome, as well.
other than that it seems most of my favourites have been mentioned already, so i’ll make it short: “gattaca” has a very unique visual style, “city of the lost children” is great, too (don’t miss out on “delicatessen” from the same guy, btw.).
Zardoz - such a unique and bizarre vision of the future
The Cell - unique and bizarre
Yellow Submarine - yeah, so I have a thing for unique and bizarre; wanna fight about it ![]()
The Dark Crystal
I just watched “In Good Company”…and for some odd reason it made me forget about “King Kong”…but then I remembered the “Neverending Story” which made me think of “The Seven Samurai”
Then I realised honestly Calvin…your really ecelectic.
Zardoz
LOL so there you are - the only other person in the world who saw that one!
Another sci fi oldie, that always makes me cry at the end - Silent Running, with Bruce Dern. Important message in it too, and the effects were great for the time.
Halmat na borovinkite (http://imdb.com/title/tt0339099/)
Man on the moon
Amadeus
Opasen char
Gospodin za edin den
21 grams
Big fish
Pi
the passion of the christ
and a lot more i can’t remember now!
Wauw im pretty surprised that the alien movies are on so few lists. For me those movies are my biggest inspiration for all. Think about how cruxial the design was to make them work: On one hand you need a very realistic and gritty setting for the surroundings (space ships and space stations) to make them believeable. On the other hand you have Gigers amazing and almost abstract, yet believable biomechanical designs. Whithout those great designs the 4 movies would have been nothing.
(yes not all 4 movies are great movies, but they all have amazing designs imo)
Other movies that inspire me greatly are blade runner and robocop.
Movies mentioned here like Magnolia, Requiem, Donnie darko and Von Trier movies, are to me just fantastic movies, but not necessarily a big source of visual inspiration. :surprised
Of course, the first Alien movie and Giger himself, greatly inspiring and influential to my young self… but I think many of us tend to avoid “me too” posts, it’s been listed once, why keep repeating it.
Ahh, Voices of a Distant Star…that was really inspiring, and then depressing after I had a stab at 2D animation and managed to create a 5-second movie. Eh.
Dark City is the best movie that I’ve ever seen that aired past midnight on TV. Really effective use of vfx, the shifting buildings were so creepy when I first saw them.
Related to films that don’t use vfx/animation, if you’ve watched 21 Grams but haven’t watched Amores Perros you should do so now. It’s by the same director, I think? It’s very sad at the end, though.
Good to hear people like Gattaca, we’re doing it as our English film study for my final year
So now I’m looking forward to it.
At the moment i’m laying sick in bed with some gastic flu, so its movie time for me, rcently i;ve lost track of time and am not seeing as much movies as i used to. My mind is pretty weary with medicine and so all sorts of thoughts are going through it , can’t really focus on anything really. But till i get back to normal, there is one movie that just has to be mentioned in this thread, its Dark COmical Script truly is the right medium for depicting its philosophy: The movie is “Fight Club”,
Oh yeah and once you get passed the action and Amazing CG in The MAtrix and The Animatrix, it’s concepts and philosophy are nevertheless always inspiring.
