XSI Mod Tool DVD Tuts?

#1

Hi, im the kinda person who learns best from videos or in a class, im wanting to start adding custom models to my HL2 maps and was thinking of downloading the mod tool, however, my questions is the dvd tuts sold on like digital-tutors.com and the other places, will i be able to understand what there taking about if im not using the actual xsi release or does the mod tool have a different interface than xsi? I mean dont really want to to spend $50 on a dvd thats worthless to me. If i like 3d modeling and everything i’ll eventually buy a academic version, so another question is will i be able to open the mod tool files in the actual release of xsi if i buy it later on?

The mod tool is essentially the same thing as the full version, so go for it.

gnomon for more advanced stuff, digital tutors for the basics, 3dquakers…

I also have a link in my sig to a gun modeling tutorial I made at the time for hl2. It’s old, xsi 4, but the modeling tools haven’t changed that much since then, and it’s free.

You can also surf to several mod-forums,for different games(like www.crymod.com ) and browse thru the tutorial for xsi…you can find a lot of basic tuts here for xsi, also in the xsi section, you can find tons of tuts for xsi…

Is it basic? Explain what im actually doing? or is it just “do this, do that, and do this again and then do that and then you finish with that and your done” kinda thing. I have liked the dvd tuts in the past because of the detail and explanation of what im suppose to be doing. Once i build my new rig and i can play crysis at good speeds i want to start making maps for it. I watched a video of the map editor and i was just blown away at the way its done…really amazing, never seen anything like it.

Thanks for the reply guys.

If you haven’t used xsi at all yet, then you might want to get something more basic which covers the interface etc. I very briefly go through the controls, and dive right into the modeling. It’s in realtime, so I’m explaining what I’m doing the whole time, I actually recorded the audio while I was creating the model. The modeling process is explained.
