XGen question

#1

I have a landscape/terrain that is currently 45,000 units by 45,000 units. I have been asked to populate this with trees, shrubs, rocks, etc… What would be the best way to attack this? Creating an XGen description for this terrain seems to crash Maya 2016 100% of the time. I’ve read that I should scale the landscape down, freeze the transforms, and then apply the XGen description to this scaled down version. After the description gets applied then I can scale the terrain back up. Is this the best approach?

Thank you for your time.

yes scale down and up does work fine…
but you could also use MASH new world node to do that… very handy…
or SouPs instancer…

If you want to go a cleaner, more artistic route and aren’t planning on animating the scene, try Environment System instead of Xgen. It’s much faster and easier to work with, though it lacks some flexibility as a tradeoff.

I use it for almost all of my foliage/natural population, anymore. Millions of instances and billions of polys, no problem.

Infernal you should do a new scene…

Thanks to both of you! I appreciate the quick response and I will definitely check on that script.
