Xbox & Playstation Game Development

I just want to inquire what particular program is used to develop games for consoles PS & Xbox? And what particular computer language do they use to create games? I want to make games destined for the said game consoles any suggestions are welcome.

They program in C and/or C++ using Visual Studio or any other IDE of their choice and GCC. There are custom versions of GCC for some specific consoles, but they aren’t freely available. Developers have special development kits they license from Sony and MS for development. The kit license is around 15-20,000 and you cannot get a kit unless you have a contract with a licensed publisher. Xbox uses Direct X for the graphics API and Sony has it’s own hardware libraries. Developers often use middleware for development, this is software and libraries provided by second and third parties for game development. Havoc, Prodg… these are examples of middleware, http://www.snsys.com/Products/ For graphics you can use any 3D and 2D software you want so long as you can get assets into a format fit for your game. The developers usually write their own tools to get assets from programs like Maya, Max, XSI and LW into their game.

Your best bet, if you want to develop games is to just get started on your PC. Dowload the free version of Visual C++, and Direct X SDK or OpenGL (GLUT), along with some 3D software (free software you can use to develop your own games includes Blender, Houdini Apprentice, GIMP) and start trying to put something together.

adding to what he said, if you don’t know C++ don’t try to just jump in and do things, you’ll be loooooost. Grab yourself a book or something, they work wonders. I know from experience =)
