Workstation for 3ds max + Vray

#1

Hello everyone,

I want to buy a good and fast PC in order to work smoothly with 3ds MAX and Vray, but I am very confused regarding the specs because I have heard different opinions from 2 different people.

Regarding the processor, one recommended the “AMD CPU Ryzen 7 3700X (AM4/3.6 GHz/36 MB)” and the other guy said that I should get an Intel instead.

Regarding the graphics card, one recommended the “VGA GeForce RTX 3080 EAGLE OC 10G” and the other said that this is not appropriate for renderings and that I should get the “PNY Quadro P4000 8GB (VCQP4000-PB)”.

I really have zero experience about this stuff so maybe you can help me!

Thank you,
Irida

CPU Ryzen9 3900XT/3950, but wait because new processors are due which could greatly affect price.
Single-core performance of the AMD thread-rippers is quite low and only rendering benefits from high core count.

3ds max and Vray do not benefit from Quadros at all unless you need the extra RAM.

RTX3090 would be preferable because of the extra RAM, but if money is tight get the RTX3070 and upgrade every year.

Edit: Some thread-rippers actually have similar clock-speeds to the Ryzen9 processors and are thus better in every single way… apart from the price.

Hi Irida,

I hope my inputs are valid… as there are many people in CG Society who are more expert than me…

But I have some experience with your question because I also was in the same situation as you are now…

You should start by laying out 2 diagrams on what you want to do with your new pc… a diagram for software and a diagram for hardware.

Read the links below that I have searched and read myself… they will definitely help you.

https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VMAX/System+Requirements

Reference -

Hardware -
Motherboard -
I guess this is the most important of all decisions because you can upgrade RAM / Processor / Graphic Cards after a few years. (Dual processor motherboards are available if you are interested). Dual graphic card with SLI bridge support are available.
Storage - no doubt SSD for operating systems is recommended these days - rest is really up to you - 7200 RPM HDD for other storage is a good option.
Cooling - depends on what external cooling you have… and where you live.
RAM (Brand/speed/memory) - I don’t know tech specs because this is directly related to processor config and mother board config… take a few suggestions for this.

Software -

Here are the tasks I think when it comes to working with software - 3ds max and VRAY.

• Modelling
1. Processors - Frequency of processors matters for faster performance.
2. RAM - Requirements depend on complexity of scenes.
3. Graphics card - for smooth viewport responses / FPS.
https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems-for-Autodesk-3ds-Max-159/Hardware-Recommendations

• Dynamics (Simulations)
I know less about this because I have hardly done simulations.
Refer to - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/PHX4MAX/Setup+and+Installation

• Rendering
GPU - Interactive Rendering with VRAY - more CUDA cores / memory - the previews will be generated faster.
(GEFORCE 30series would be really worth it). Please read about upcoming graphic cards on the internet.
Processor - Better the ---- Core Count / Frequency / Cache / Threads — faster the rendering.
RAM - Depends on complexity of scenes… I would recommend 32 GB minimum upradable upto 128 GB if required for complex scenes.

• Post Production Software work - PS / Premiere / After FX.
•Higher the resolution of images - Higher hardware requirements.

Also INTEL VS AMD - I cannot answer that question - it creates an EPIC of a debate really. I have used both… and I think both are great.

Like KaaF suggested benchmarks -
Benchmark websites will help you compare - INTEL VS AMD.

Also SD3Dv2 said… many good processors / graphic cards are due to be released…

Please do a firm research and wait if required.

Hope this helps…

Best of Luck!
