workstation config advice for Houdini FX

#1

Hello,
So i am planning to buy:

CPU: E5-2630 x 2
ECC RAM: Kingston ValueRam DDR3 Single Rank
GPU: GTX 780 6GB (allready have it)
Motherboard: Asus Z9PE-D8 WS
Case: Nanoxia DS6
SSD: samsung 840 pro
display: Dell U2412M 24
PSU: Sirtec 1600w (allready have it)

This is the first time i am buying workstation components and i really don’t know if it they will work together.
Please give me your feedback/advice.

Thanks

Those CPU are only decent for rendering, for everything else they will be terribly slow. Choose Xeons only if you can afford higher clocked CPU like the 2687W(2000$each), otherwise go for an OC 6/8core i7.
There are already a few discussions about this topic here on the first page.

TLDR; Only pick dual xeons if you are going to choose a reasonably high end speed ie. >3GHz. Slow Xeons are a poor choice for a workstation.

Thanks Imashination. My budget is 4000$ and there is no 3ghz+ xeon that can work in dual mode and with enough cores. Should i go with the i7 5960x and overclock it? Isn’t Overclocking dangerous when running simulations alot?
The thread you linked is mostly about rendering. 90% of the time i will be making simulations in houdini which is multi-threaded.

What do you think?

No, it isn’t dangerous, and there is no real difference between rendering and doing physics sims. You won’t get any dual xeon worth having for $4,000

Ok, than i7 it is

What do you think about this configuration:

Asus X99 Deluxe Motherboard
i7 5960x cpu
32 gb ddr 4 memory (4 x 8gb)
geforce gtx780 6gb (i allready have it)
Sirtec 1600 watt (i allready have it)
NH-D15 CPU cooler
SSD: samsung 840 pro
Nanoxia Deep Silence 6 Case

-should i get a 27" display instead of 24"?

I am planning to overclock the cpu to at least 4.0 GHz
