Works in Progress

Thanks Joe, I found the “is rod” setting under Dynamics for hair/fur but your explanation works just as well. I probably haven’t played with Bones yet so have yet to find where all the other “is rod” settings are!

BTW… I like the “boobs” analogy… so much more picturesque!

#382

Sweeeeeet pic, Stephen! Briar is looking simply fantastic! Can’t wait to see where she goes from here!

#383

Stephen,

I find the reflections in her eyes especially exquisite. Any tips or tricks?
Great stuff.

#384

Hey Alonso and Hooch,

Thanks for the comments. Apart from the hair, she really hasn’t changed much, it’s just now, she’s ready for her close up. As mischievous as ever, her eyes are the same large orbs and her mouth is just as wide.
BTW, nice work on Mr. Hairy, Hooch.

Justin,

Congrats on landing your latest gig at ReelFX, your irrepressible!:applause:

Zero2zillion,

Nothing special about the reflections in her eyes. The eyes have the usual recessed pupil and transparent cornea geometry. The surface settings for the cornea group are: Transparency 95%, Reflectivity 30%, Roughness 1%, Specular intensity 600% and specular size 3%.
To get good reflections you need an environment with lots of contrast, well that’s my latest unscientific theory.

Here’s a clip of Briar with her new hair. I haven’t managed to control the collision setting, so I’ve left it out. To avoid pass throughs the stiffness setting is quite high and this has meant the hair can look a little rigid at times. I shall play around with the ‘angle limits’ and ‘gravity’ settings next…thanks John K.

I was going to say " wow! look how the software has improved the fur settings but that would ignore the effort YOU (the artist) put in to achieve the fabulous piece of work you posted! Keep the updates coming!

#386

Hey Steve, that is some really nice work there. I would say that it is some of your finest yet! I can almost hear her eating that apple. The part where she moves it round in her hand is priceless.

I can’t wait to se how the underlying symbolysm of the apple intertwines with the subtext of the diegetic strands of narrative.

Oh, the hair looks pretty good to - and the nostrils really arn’t a problem at that distance.

#387

Oh, one tiny nitpick (and it really is the only thing that I would change at all), Is that there could maybe be little more ease in and eas out on the eye movement near the beginning.

Sorry, you know me, I HAD to make some kind of criticism.

Wonderfull stuff though Steve. I really think that you have to find some way of marketing it as you could make bucks!

#388

Hehe…very fun little clip there, Stephen. Is this part of the story, or something done just for testing purposes? (guessing the former)

Hooch, You’re never boring
John, thanks.
In terms of marketing, I’ve been meaning to make a web site (or page) devoted to my progress on Briar Rose. But I reckon the people who cared would just get disappointed at the long pauses between updates.
Justin, you guessed right:thumbsup:

Pequod,
No, a site would be cool … to see it all in one place. I for one am a recent fan of the Briar Rose thing and who knows what I’ve missed? Well you do but you get the point.

Congrats on this level of realism.

Vury, vury niiiiizzze animation Stephen - lots of character and dare I say - “life” - are you looking for crits, or is it still a WIP? I don’t want to hash over (no pun intended) something you plan to do…

Someday, I’ll be able to animate just like you

#392

are you looking for crits

Please fire away!

BTW, Ken Baer says on the Hash forum, your Hunter dynamic test is proving to be a big hit:buttrock:

#393

Still need to paint the teeth and wings and start working on some sprites, but I’m pretty happy with it.

#394

Lookin’ kick-ass, William! Are you planning to do an environment like the one in the movie? Any animation in mind? Would be very cool to see about doing something like the luminous whip, too… hmmmm… interesting technical problem there…

Anyway, keep us updated - it’s looking great!

#395

Wow! this is really looking rather bloody good. Makes me want to get more into texturing. You are really showing off the abilties of both AM and yourself.

#396

Stephen - I love the animation! The way she rolls the apple around in her hand is perfect and, I don`t know about you, but I find these little actions are often the most difficult to animate. It all looks very natural to me. Great.

William - Amazing image of the Balrog! Your tutorial was very helpful too. I tend to use mainly procedurals because I go for more cartoony stuff but I should really start using more accurate and detailed textures I think.

I`m working on an entry for the Hash Animation Comp ( I thought it was about time ) if I get it completed.

After seeing the above work though, I feel very inadequate again:)

#397

My WIP Fender Stratocaster.

(picserver gives me limited bandwidth, if the image is down you can go to a mirror)

I hate the material on the headstock, but other than that it’s almost done. I’ve gotten some help from resident expert modeler and guitarist Dan Shimmyo.

Questions? Comments?

Zack

#398

Stephen, the motion looks excellent. I actually get the sense that she has stuff in her mouth!
Hair looks good too.

Hey Zack,

I’m assuming you’re using materials for your colors - which is good and bad - good in that it’s pretty easy to get decent results, bad in that you can only push them so far. I think that the overall shape is there, but if you really want to push it to the next level, you’re going to have to put some more effort into texturing. You could make a pretty cool metallic material for the body, and a pearlescent material for the faceplate - then add some brass components, and maybe some environment mapping for the tuning tabs… also, the strings all look like they are the same diameter - might be nice to vary these a bit…

There is a lot of nice detail, but it kind of gets glossed over by the generic nature of the materials…

Just my $.02

Thanks Joe,

Actually, that’s why it’s a WIP  . I definitely want to take it to the next level, so your $0.02 is more than welcome here. I really only consider the modeling as done, so now I’m moving on to texturing.

I was planning on texturing in photoshop, but the body and pick guard (or face plate) were the only parts I was considering leaving. It’s based on my own guitar and they are pretty flat colorwise, although they are very reflective. should I paint them in photoshop? And if so, how would you suggest I go about it?

I actually like the materials on the fretboard, it looks very close to what I have.

The strings are now different diameters, well there are now two sizes, large and small. one is .2 cm thickness and the other is .1 cm thickness. Will post a pic later. The tabs have absolutely no texturing done yet.

Thanks,

Zack
