Working on my demo reel for animation - Need rigs.. Can you help?

#1

Hey, I am currently attending Full Sail University in Florida. I will be graduating in about 5 months. The creation of my demo reel begins very soon. I am an animator and I need rigs to animate. I have seen all the rigs that are floating around the web for free, however, my requirements are a little more than just a very basic rig.

I will most likely be using the Morpheus or Moom rig for full character animations, however, I wanted to also show off animations of facial emotions, as well as a character sleeping and having internal thoughts. All ties to having a very good facial rig or at least upper body rig.

Would anyone be willing to let me use their rigs on my demo reel? Proper credit will be given, of course. It is a way for you to get out there and expand your name, as well as for me, to actually be able to use high quality characters on my demo reel and really show off my talents.

Please let me know. This is very important to me.

Thank you for your time.

Morpheus probably has the best facial controls of any free rig at the moment, by a long shot, and is extremely customizable. I would have killed for a rig like that back in school.

The only issue I have is that, I wanted to have good full character rigs like Morpheus but I also wanted to have very high quality rigs as well to show off. Those high quality rigs are usually never ‘FREE’. So the best thing to do is work with someone who has created a high quality rig so I can use the rig to animate, as well as help the other person out by mentioning him on my demo reel so he gets more attention. You never know, a company might like the rig and ask for his or her information and the person may get hired based on this alone. So it just helps everyone. But yeah, I was looking for high quality characters.

Unfortunately, finding a well-modeled character with an appealing design and a quality body/facial rig is pretty much the holy grail, especially as a student. I appreciate the desire to animate with unique characters, but Morpheus really has a lot flexibility in this regard. Previous milestones were Generi and Norman, the latter of which was a drastic improvement but still had frustratingly limited facial controls. I’ve seen people re-model Morpheus’s body and significantly alter his facial appearance… in the absence of anyone dropping gorgeous rigged character in your lap, I would really advise just customizing it yourself and focusing on animation.

Just thought of another option: check out animationrigs.com, where you can pay $15/month for access to a number of custom character rigs. The concept of subscription-based rig access is a bit weird, but if you look at it as an investment, $60 will get you all the characters for an entire semester’s worth of animation work. I haven’t personally tried the rigs myself but they’re running a contest starting in April and everyone will get a month of free access. Might be worth checking out…

Oh wow, thats awesome Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. I was thinking about your advice on just using Morpheus, and even customizing him a little bit. Thats not a bad idea at all. But I’ll check out the website, it sounds like a pretty good deal. Awesome advice, thank you so much.

Does fullsail really not provide their own rigs to use for character animation?

I have a few rigs that I’ve created for my own personal use. however, I ditched Maya long ago, and the characters are rigged in Softimage. I can only assume your using Maya, based on the rigs already mentioned.

needless to say, even without a highly complex face rig, you can still get quite a bit of quality animation out of it. at a certain point, it’s not the rig, but the animator.

the Animationrigs.com characters are probably your best bet. They’re designed/rigged very much like Bishop from AnimationMentor. However, I can’t say that the bishop face rig is very advanced at all. in fact, it’s quite simple. But some of the animations students have pulled from it is amazing work.

Full Sail does provide a basic rig that is pretty sweet, however, I rather not use the same rig in my demo reel. AnimationRigs.com is what I have been using so far and they are very good. I am loving their rig, however, there are few things here and there that cause a problem for me. Such as the stretchy on and off attribute is buggy and sometimes doesn’t work. As well as some tools that cause issues depending on whether or not you are using MAC or PC. However, for the most part, their customer service is great. They are busy these days dealing with the contest so the issues may not get looked into as much, but I usually get a reply within a couple of hours if I run into any issues.

Also, Full Sail has made it easy for us to get the customized Norman Rigs. They have like tons of different Norman rigs. But yeah, I’m using the animationrigs.com’s stuff and I am pretty happy with it.

Thanks for your input guys. Appreciate it.
