WIP. - Mute City

Hi there,

I’m currently stucking with this one.

Previous Step;

Even though knowing that besides that it needs some detail work on the tower and the horizon line as well as on the transitions+colours, I feel not very satisfied with the overall composition… maybe too flat or boring?! I generally like 2,35:1 better but i dont know how I feel cutting of the towers top… I should’ve thought about that earlier.

Current Step:

I had the feel the Composition was a bit flat or something was missing so I added a river and continued with the original 16:9 comp. I worked a bit on the midground, especially the perspective of streets and details of the buildings. Later on I’m planing to add a huge shadow of the building and adjust the athmosphere to be more sun-set ish like.

Even though its probably way too cloudy to be a clear sunset atmosphere with a hot sun I like the clouds and I’m not sure if I should keep them or make it more “realistic” with a clean sky.

Edit* Next Wip;
Cheers
Juan

This is really beautiful! I also really like the design work you’ve done on the hero building.

Right now the fluffy white clouds are attracting a lot of my attention due to the contrast… you could experiment with different levels of atmosphere there to play with how the composition reads and what you want the viewer to see and in what order.
When I saw this I went right to the clouds first and then looked at the beautiful building second.

If I was building a cityscape matte painting like this at my job I’d probably have to include different passes of atmosphere or glow for those clouds for the compositors to be able to push and pull depending on what the client wants.

Thank you Ken.

I do agree with what you said about the clouds. I’ll leave it up for a couple of days and come back to the painting on sunday. I’ll try to do something with the clouds though.

Hey Juan, nice to see you posting here!

This is a cool idea, I think you should insist more on the mood and it will get there. Here’s a couple of quick pointers, sorry if you’re already aware of them:

  • Currently the Sun doesn’t interact at all with the atmosphere - it’s glow should progressively affect and dissolve into the atmosphere rather than just stop at the edge of it’s diameter.

-The horizon clouds need to match the atmosphere - if this is a sunset, they should fall into an orange/yellow/magenta color palette; they are also too contrasty for their distance, need more depth. You might also wanna lift them a bit - they seem kindof low/cutoff at the bottom.

-The haze over the city should gradually fade towards the FG. It should also match the overall palette of a sunset - orange/yellow, rather than being gray/white.

-Since this is a sunset, the buildings should be backlit, with GI being very minimal. City lights should help define over the shadow/unlit areas, rather than GI.

Cheers,
T.

Hi Tiberius,

yeah mp.org got pretty quite recently so I went over here :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks though for your critique, I appreciate that.

I’ll apply a lot of changes over the weekend when I got a bit of freetime and will post it here.

Specially the athmosphere is what needs work, you’re totally right. Also though I’m not totally sure what you mean by GI.

Thanks.
Juan
