WIP Mattepainting, need some opinions

#1

Hello, I could really use some ideas and some eye outside the mattepainting. My biggest problem is how to balance the picture better. Because now the right side feel to empty compared to the intresting left side… Opinions and critics are really welcomed. Thanks

Im thinking that maybe a shot down plane in the water to the right side. With blood splattered on the cockpit window could work and give some dramatic scene into it… ;D

First image is Plate, second image is WIP matte

Go to mattepainting org there is some excellent tutorials on landscape composition, you also need to look at aerial perspective. The island in the far distance is the same tonal value as the central island. You also need to imply a sense of scale with a manmade object, tree, creature.

I would probably do a ww2 scene from the Battle Of Midway, a naval cruiser or something and tropical plants.

If you sign up to picturetrail.com you can upload your paintings there and they will give you a url, just copy and paste into the textbox on this site and everyone can view your images at a reasonable resolution.

We are a strange bunch here, we lurk and read posts but rarely respond. You have a lot of work to do on this image however with our support you will get through it.

Look forward to seeing more

Your absolutely right about the tone in the foreground should be more blueish and the one nearer should be a warmer colour… But I havent really come to fine adjusting that yet. Im just at the moment tries to focus what to do to make the picture more intresting. And your idea about a cruiser or something probably would make the picture more intresting and give some scale to it, I have maya skills so maybe I should model one. Also maybe keep the airplanes in the background to give dynamic and a depth in the picture? Really appreciate your tip and I really take it serious since you are a pro photographer and you guys usually have good eyes :D, thanks alot.

Have you noticed that the inclusion of scale gives you that edge!

The lighting on the main island needs more lifting to make it more 3d. You can with the lasso tool make a selection triangular on one side, the apex at the top the two bottoms where the shoreline hits the water using curves tool slightly pull the lighting up.

Where the rocks hit the water lift the lighting as the water will bounce light back up to the rocks.

You can also paint in specular reflection to create a leading line into the cove. This will give movement and rythmn to the scene.

Keep with it,

Also have ago at increasing the scale of the cruiser, do the squint eye test and see if being larger helps.

Flip the picture upside down you can see the difference it makes.

Look forward to seeing more,

Rich

Absolutely, will look into that, thanks. Would also help if you said what you like about it, (if there is anything you do like about it :P) so I know what do keep and to put focus on. Thanks again.
