Ok, starter for 10.
My initial sketch over the plate is starting to fish eye - I’m going to go with that for the time being.
Concept wise, I’m thinking of taking the class-structure literally. Top-down, we’re looking from/at a middle class balcony, so I’m positioning my shot in the middle of the gorge, slightly nearer the top. I’m interested in finding a geographical example of a similar sized gorge. Most Earthbound gorges tend to taper out at the top as weathering has more effect there. But on Kreola, unknown forces could have shaped this 200m precipice and there’s nothing to suggest how close the sides are? I’m interested in the town-planning aspect, getting light down to the bottom and getting water upto to the top. What’s the affect of having the underclass right next to the river at the bottom? Is that the sewer, or is it kept clean somehow?
I’m going to leave that one and focus on the idea of getting natural daylight to ‘bounce’ into the depths of the gorge. This will give a strong ‘alien’ narrative to the architecture and technology I use. It also suggests a rather sustainable, ecological society, so I’m going to let some of that verdant nature (from Milan’s impressive title shot) creep over the top and into the city.
My drawing ability is not good enough to let me get this kind of perspective correct so I’m going to start using 3D to block-out my camera position, scale and basic geometry. I’m still undecided about the look and feel, in terms of, will it be very recycled city: rusty i-beams and balconies made of shipping containers? Or could it be more forest materials?
I’m definitely going to look for some good references around geology and suks - as I think that’s a good lead!
