WIP : KREOLA - Isaac McNicol

Hello!

So this is the beginning of an adventure for me! I’m an architect who just got his first job and though I don’t like admitting it even to myself, I’m rethinking careers! I did some animation electives at uni and fell in love with it and ever since it’s been stirring away in the background.

So until yesterday I didn’t really know what matte painting was but I reckon this could be fun! I’d done some large architectural type renders before but never such a full on painting so this is going to be a challenge! - especially considering how late in the day I’ve left it to sign up to this challenge - it’s, what, about half way through from what I gather…

Oh well.

So, go easy, it’s my first foray into this medium but I’m hoping I have time to grab it with both hands and produce something I can be proud of!

Stay posted for images. As yet I’ve given it all of 3 minutes of thought as to what I’m going to do but having a look at the standard so far I have my work cut out for me to do something in any way different!

Ok so I’ve finally found a bit of time to actually do something other than doodles on the train.

Here’s my process so far…
As I go I’m realising architectural drawing is really very different from DMP and I’m realising why the word painting is in there :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways did a couple of linedrawings in my sketchbook:

Try a free image hosting website and then embedding your picture in your next post.

Heyo idymc,

The image you just posted still isn’t working. Which website did you use to host the image?

Ah! Finally got it working. Tried imageshack.us to no avail.
Got postimg.org to work finally.

I was going to upload screen shots of my photoshopage but will have to wait till tonight to do it now.

Thanks for your help.

So I ended up going with the composition at the second bottom right as you’ll see in my next post. The idea being I wanted to keep the street intact as much as possible. I will open up the foreground to the cavernous space below.

Given my limited experience and time I thought I would limit the amount of detailing and make what I do more large scale moves like lighting, composition to get as big a bang for the effort as I can. I’m going to rely on a lot of rock textures for cliffs. Wanted to retain as natural a feel as possible and the fact that it’s an alien world maybe rely on a planet or two in the sky or something. Any ideas of how else I could do that?

Maybe I’ll have time to do a bit of rendering in vary but my 3D experience is very limited so maybe not. We’ll see.

Ok finally gotten around to putting up some other early WIPs.

I had a go in PS but realised it wasn’t going to be easy to get photos of what I was trying to build:

so I was inspired by another guys rough lighting and composition painting whose techniques I tried to mimic a little, seems to be a better process and one that allows elements to be slid in under the shading to add detail while keeping the atmosphere the same.

Obviously very low on detail at this stage but I think I’m getting somewhere compositionally…
