WIP - dmp exercises

#1

Hi guys,
I’ve been doing some mattepaints in my own time for practice and to add to a new portfolio. Would appreciate getting some feedback/crit to see what could be better.

The good old Victorian Street mattepainting challenge, decided to finally take a crack at it.

victorian street dmp - victorian street original plate

Mattepaint made by combining plates to make a whole image.

landscape dmp

Snowed up a scene.

snow scene dmp - snow scene original plate

Day to night scene. I still feel the lights are not as they should be.

day to night dmp - day to night original plate

Thanks in advance!

Hey Eva,

Nice work! I really like the snow you added, very believable.

I noticed your comment about not being happy with your lighting in the last image and I thought I would take a few minutes to do some paint over, hope you don’t mind. For me the image was missing some depth so I added some haze working its way into the background and a bit of fog. I brightened up the window lighting on the left side (The light on the right side could use the same treatment.).

One thing that can really help an image like this is making sure that your light sources are some of the areas around it. There are many great shapes around those lights so it can be good to have your light source hitting those, adding more visual interest to the artwork.

Hope that helps and keep up the good work

Hi Matt, and thanks! No worries, I really appreciate getting paintovers, it really helps me to see what could be better.

The day to night dmp was really bugging me so thanks for taking your time to check it out. I see what you mean about the lights and the overall lighting, and the haze and fog also add much more depth to the whole scene. I’m going to go back to this one and make changes with all of this in mind. Thanks again!

Hey no problem, glad to help.

nice compositions… neat and clean:-)

First comp:
it requires little bit realistic look and feel (may be adding some dirty, stain etc…) especially on ‘charlotte street…sign boards’ , road, pavement and things are pavement,

Second comp:
I see your mid ground mountains (left side) and background mountains are in same height I think you should scale it down your background mountains

Third comp:
Nice work…probably you should add some fog, and haze to give some depth

Fourth comp:
This is your best:-)…just like third comp even this requires some depth…just like Matt showed you by adding fog and foreground little brighter than background

Hope this helps

Great pointers gitchas, I’m going to address these as well. Thanks!

Good work! I think everyone agrees that your “day to night” one is really good but I think you’ve done well in all. I also like the first one. Didn’t realize anyone had played around with the picture until I compared the old with the new.

Mat’s retouch is unreal.

Thank you for all your comments and feedback, I learned a lot
