WIP Card Challenge - A of Hearts

Let’s work! Soon I’ll post some sketches…

Hi guys,

the letter “A” is the vowel more open and easy to talk to and is usually one of the first syllables spoken by babies. after reflection, I decided I’d like a more playful theme for my drawing.

Comments are welcome!

It’s cute.

Try flipping the drawing horizontally so that the overall composition isn’t just a diagonal slash, where you are unintentionally connecting the two A’s at either corner.

…At this stage, I flipped the composition to neutralize the diagonal line that had formed (thanks Lunatique). Here I defined the character and decided what colors fits better. So I preferred to use the reds analogous colors because other types of palettes weakened the color identity of the suit.

The new face isn’t nearly as cute/charming as the sketch. It might be a good idea to keep it cartoony/cute instead of making the person more realistic/distinct. Think about appeal–how the character will be perceived by all kinds of people. The more vague/simple/cute the subject is, the wider its appeal, because it isn’t distinct enough to repel any specific group. Compared to the previous vague/cute face, the new one is just some chubby guy with a round face who isn’t attractive–who would he appeal to?

I agree with Lunatique. I liked the charm of the first sketch more. See if you can bring back some of that whimsy and I think you’ll have something awesome here. Any updates?

I agree with you guys. I thought about it and I draw some alternative figures and choose the simplest one. I think that is soo hard to keep the power of the sketch live throughout the entire process. Often my sketches are much stronger than the final image. How can I handle it? Anyone knows some reference about this issue?..
…So, I simplified the clothes too because sounds more coherent keep all clean as the face is.

:wip: Thanks everybody!

It’s done! I guess…

Hiya, I haven’t been around here for years, so hopefully what I say is at least a little useful for you!

The previous step was incredibly cute and charming: it made me grin! I think it’s lost something again in the most recent version.

There feels like something of a mismatch between the clean shiny balloon and the brushstrokes on the figure.

The smoother rendering on the face and dark shadows of the mouth have made the left cheek/side of mouth look wrong - that corner of the mouth is too pointy and the line of the mouth too straight.

The new hair has gone a bit furry - I really liked the lines of the locks in the last version. I think next to the balloon the hair is lacking shine and all the little highlights. It doesn’t really clump and tangle enough, if you know what I mean.

I think in general the balloon grabs too much attention away from the figure because it looks more finished.
