Anyone bold enough to try installing Windows 7 on their Softimage production machines yet?
Windows 7 and Softimage?
Been using Win 7 x64 RC1 on all my production machines since it was released. At this point I have no issues at all.

I installed SI 7.5 a few months ago on x64 Win7 release candidate and it worked great. System is an Intel Q6600 w/ 4GB of ram. No problems whatsoever due to the OS.
I’ve asked in a couple of places, but received no replies.
I want to upgrade my existing x64 XP rig to Win 7 64, but the only thing holding me back is the Softimage 2010 network license. Any advice before I embark on this fool’s errand?
Unfortunately, xsisupport blog doesn’t have anything on the subject.
Licensing on Windows 7 is like licensing on Vista (because both have IPv6 enabled by default).
If you have Softimage and the license server on the same computer, then you either have to 1) use the IPv4 address to point to the license server or 2) install the IPv6 update for the license manager.
The IPv6 update allows you to use the computer name to point to the license server.
Thanks for the reply, but my question is more basic. Should I uninstall the XP software first or borrow the license before doing the upgrade to Windows 7? I don’t plan to reformat the drive, so will any of my settings survive the migration from XP to 7?
A network license is tied to the MAC address of the computer. An OS upgrade should not change the MAC address, so your network license will still be valid.
Mr Dreamer, it work’s pretty well, only some screen glitches, like on save as, but do read Stephens excellent 7 step program on his site, followed that and no problems at all.
Thanks guys. I’ll give it a shot and report back.
In case anyone is interested, the seven-step guide Terry mentioned is here: http://xsisupport.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/installing-your-new-2010-network-license/
Been using 2010 and windows 7 with minimal problems here, got about 15 people using that configuration so far…
I’ve been using this for over 6 months… 7 is way better than that vista nonsense! More stable, so long as you dont make the silly mistake of installing the 32 bit version on win 7 64.

I’m happy to report that Softimage 2010 was actually the simplest tool to reactivate following my migration to Windows 7. 3DS Max 2010 was the only Autodesk app that required a brief call to activate.
I’m sure I’m missing a bunch of minor apps and utilities I’ve accumulated over the years, but my workstation feels almost new now.
Definitely worth the effort!
Was that a PC or a Mac?
I’m thinking about putting Windows on my MacBook, so I could run XSI (7.01) on it.
Since I would have to buy the Windows-license, I would prefer Windows 7, however, I have no experience of running any Windows on Mac yet and if that is indeed the same as running it on PC hardware from application’s point of view.
Hey! I Bootcamped about 6 months ago all my apps run fine and we are purchasing Softimage next week to add to the pipeline, Maya 2010, Max2010, Mudbox2010 work a dream… the only problems I have are that my Maya 2009 on the mac side isnt working well under snow leopard… go figure. As much as I love my Mac I will be back to PC’s by mid next year. I think you should be fine… oh we use Mac Pros over here so might be different on MacBook not sure? Can’t imagine it would be.
Thanks for sharing that, Jon!
I still haven’t installed Windows on my mac, but it’s high up on my todo-list.
I’d better do some research on the pro/regular differences first, but it’s probably just a matter of performance.
Hey,
I emailed Autodesk customer service about running Softimage 2010 on Win 7 and this is the reply I got yesterday.
Dear Sean:
Thank you for contacting Autodesk, Inc.
Softimage 2010 was not tested or qualified on Windows 7. You should be able to run Softimage 2010 on Windows 7, but at this time we may not be able to resolve every issue you encounter. At this time we have no further information on future releases of Softimage. Please continue to check www.autodesk.com for future information on product releases. Thank you for contacting Autodesk and have a great day!
Best Regards,
Katt Gordon

Do these glitches force you to restart Softimage 2010 or do they go away after a moment? I take it all the features youve used seem to work fine so far?
It’s nothing really major, it’s just some visual stuff on buttons that has to be fixed in a next version. I’ve been running SI on W7RC for months now (as a lot of other software) and it all works just fine.
When it runs on Vista, it will (exception to the rule here…) will run on W7 without any (major) problems.
