Which RAID for Synology NAS

#1

I want to move all my stuff from all those separate HDDs on a single NAS. I bought a Synology 213+ sometime ago and as far as I can remeber I set it up as a RAID 1. So I should have the same data on each disk and in case one of them goes down, the other one will still carry all the data.

For a new NAS/RAID I favour the same principle. Have the best safety available there is. I still need to choose the NAS, but I think I’ll go for the 2413+ or 1813+. Can anybody tell me which is the best way to go in terms of the RAID? There seems to be also the choice of SHR and SHR-2. The RAID Selector on the Synology site is not a big helper, but I guess it’s either SHR-2 or RAID 10, but I’m not really into this stuff.

Anybody an idea? I also wonder whether I can start with four or five disks and then go for more in the future or if this will become a problem with the RAID type.

Thanks for any help!

When I’ve heard people say stuff like that in the past it’s because they weren’t planning on any backup scheme, they were relying on RAID for “backup” and they’re not the same thing at all.

Picking a RAID level is pretty simple because there are only two factors that really matter. How important is uptime and how important is throughput.

For what it’s worth, there are better options out there for $1,700 than the Synology 2413+ depending on how much you want a turn-key solution versus something like NAS4Free which offers similar features to the Synology but gives you the option to choose whatever chassis you want and you could add things down the road like 10Gb Ethernet adapters.

Whatever you do plan on routine backup to another device(s) because RAID is not backup.

Thats a heck of an upgrade, do you need 100TB of old projects and assets online all the time?Throwing a harddrive into a shoebox and keeping it under the bed is a fairly common way to store old projects, then just use something like an Icy Box to grab stuff off them when needed

You might be thinking of a different product? The 2413+ is a 12 bay NAS, with RAID 5 (typical) and 4TB drives that’s roughly 40TB of usable storage when the NAS is full up with drives. For a lot of workflows that’s a reasonable amount of storage.
