which brushes and when ?

hey everyone

i am struggling a little learning digital painting in PS and to know which brushes to use and when…

i guess it comes with trail and error and experience and knowing which kind of look and style you are going for…

any tips or advice would be great

There is no rule what brush to use and when. When you get more experience you’ll learn to take advantage of diffrent sorts of brushes. It’s not the tool that makes the art, but the artist so just try and experiment untill you’ll get it right :slight_smile:

I struggled with brushes in PS too. I switched over to Painter and found it a easier but now I’m back in PS after lots of trial and error and reading all the tutorials and posts by Linda Bergkvist and Jose Oli. They are really nice to share their brushes or settings which some will say doesn’t matter but I think it really helps to narrow down a workflow for yourself. I would start experimenting with the “chalk” square-ish brushes in PhotoShop as they mimic a flat brush and go over the features CGSoceity puts out.

I should also say, I agree that knowing the exact brush doesn’t really matter. A great artist could create stunning art with ketchup packets.

We are currently wrapping up OFDW 011. For OFDW 012, which begins late Sunday night (my time) GMT -5, we are doing a Master Copy of a Bouguereau painting:

Anyone is welcome to join in at any time. :slight_smile: Typically, OFDWs run 2 weeks, but due to the complexity of the Master Painting, we will be working from 3~4 weeks on this Master Copy. People may work traditionally or digitally, 2D or 3D.

This is the pimpiest thread I’ve ever seen!

I think most people usually get used to painting in this way- base colors with a no. 9 round (change sizes) at 100% opacity, then lay over that with different brushes at different opacities. Then put ‘textures’ over with the more funky brushes. This is just one way of working, there are several others, but I found I learned quicker with this way.
