Where to purchase in the UK

#1

Hi there,

I’m considering once again picking up a LightWave license after a 10+ year absence (last version I used was 5.5  ) and was wondering where one might find the best deal here in the UK…?
I saw onevideo are selling LW9.x for £514 inc. VAT which is pretty good but was wondering if there are any better deals out there that anyone might know of?
Any tips are greatly appreciated!

That seems about the right kinda price. There isn’t usually much difference in prices as I think that they follow Newtek Europe anyway.

As a word of caution, I would hang on for a few months. 9.5 is going to be released soon and if past point-five releases are anything to go by there is likely to be some sort of deal. The price might drop a little but I suspect that there’ll be some bundled plugins or software, maybe some training materials and maybe a free update to v.10. Even if it doesn’t happen right away, there’ll probably be an offer shortly after.

The pricing goes up and down with the updates and then 3rd party add-ons get thrown in towards the end of the cycle. Past offers have included Vue 5 Infinite, LW-CAD, Fusion, Speed Edit, training DVD’s etc.

I remember how p!$$£d I was when I bought 8.3 and a month or so later they released 8.5 with Vue and a free update to 9.

Hey there biliousfrog, thanks for the advice.
I can hold out for a bit. I’ll probably be messing around with the demo version for a while anyway, refamiliarizing myself with LW.
I do like the sound of a Vue bundle. Another package I’ve been meaning to come to grips with.
By the sound of things it seems like the wait for 9.5 isn’t that long anyway… a few weeks at best?

If you own another competing application I would send them an email and see if they can do a companion upgrade for you. I recently purchased Lightwave myself doing just that. Carole is who I contacted at the European office.

Thanks Mykyl, I own several licenses for competing products, XSI, Modo, ZBrush etc.
I’m not sure I understand the idea behind a ‘companion upgrade’. What does that entail exactly?
Might I ask you to PM me some contact details for Carole?
Many thanks!

I have sent the pm with the details.

I did the same thing with my first LW purchase, I cross-graded from Truespace which was free on 3d World magazine.

I don’t know if you need to worry about holding off for 9.5 - Considering 9.5 is a free update anyway, I doubt they’ll be throwing in any incentives to encourage the free download.

8.5 was a free update too for registered users of 8+…but if you bought 8.5 towards the end of it’s cycle you got a free upgrade to 9 and a bunch of goodies. I’m just going by what Newtek have done in the past, for users of v.9 the free update is great news but if I was looking to jump into Lightwave I would rather do it either at the beginning of the cycle and get full benefit of the run or towards the end when there’s definitely going to be a free upgrade or there’s some offers. It would be a bit rubbish if you bought some software and 6 months later it’s updated but you’re not entitled to it. Some might argue that it’s worth it if it makes you money and that’s very true, it’s something that needs to be weighed up by each individual.

Thanks for the heads up cresshead. Good to see the Beta program’s up and running.

With regards to the companion upgrades, I just found this.

LW9.0 with printed manuals for £363.08 inc. VAT and no shipping fees. That’s a very good deal indeed.
Never heard of allmacshop.co.uk though. Anyone know if they are reputable?

Yeah, I’ve been looking at onevideo too. They don’t seem to offer a companion upgrade though. Would save me about £200.
