When creating a model with Maya, is it better to make each piece separate?

I’m new to modeling, how should I set up an object to become a rig?

For example, I am creating a corn stalk rig for a corn field scene. One of the stalks will become a moveable character, while the majority are used as a props with varied looks duplicated several times. Should the pieces of the model be separate and then grouped or one piece? Would the corn stalk vs the leaves as one unit or separate?

Any tips to getting started with creating industry standard models I’d really appreciate! Thanks!

there’s no right way, I like to have single meshes because it’s less confusing to rig and skin (you only have one skinCluster) but sometimes it’s better to have several shells as it’s easier to shade.

Just differentiate your environment and your ‘hero’ characters. You don’t want to reference 2000 times your character to create the corn field.
