what's the difference between biped and bones?

#1

Please, can anybody help?

I am new to animation and I want to know when to use biped or bones to animate a human character. I have no idea of what utility is better for that task. Any help will be very helpful.

Thank all you.

Well, for someone who is new to character animation, I say give biped a try for everything at first. But, DON’T become dependent on it. Biped is basically a canned rig ready for animation. It allows you to save animations, reload animations, combine animations, etc… Bones on the other hand are closer to standard max objects that are build with a hierechy already in place. Once you have layed out a bones skeletal structure, you have to create IK solvers, control objects, etc… The advantage of this is that you have total control. Much more control then Biped offers. For a beginner, I believe Biped is easier, but like I said, it is easy to become overly dependent on some of the tools Biped offers, and it can become a crutch. Basically, start with Biped, do all the tutorials you can find for it, especially the ones that come with max, and move on to bones when you are totally comfortable with Biped.
