Whats the best solution..

I am working on a project right now and im just curious as the best way to set up your comp.
I have been running into memory issues lately with this video im making (oddly enough the memory issue seems to be coming from the audio buffer?), and im wondering if there is an ideal way to set up your comp.
This may be a super noob question, so forgive me if it is, but here it goes:

I have a comp of animation I have made thats going to be about 2 minutes long. It is a mix of character animation done in targa sequences, audio and stills, and im wondering if it would save time and memory to render out the targa sequences into quicktime movies, then import those into the final comp, or keep them as targa sequences in the final comp.

And if and when I render out the sequences to quicktime, should I leave them as lossless, or use an mpeg4 compression? (im thinking keeping them as lossless is the best idea, but from what I can see, the mpeg4 compression looks pretty good)

I have always just done projects as image sequences, but this project is a bit bigger… So im thinking rendering out the sequences as QT movies would be best…
If anyone has some insight on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Fatty. (Thats me, not you) lol

No, dont render them as QT and re import. No need. waste of time. No benefit

And if and when I render out the sequences to quicktime, should I leave them as lossless, or use an mpeg4 compression? (im thinking keeping them as lossless is the best idea, but from what I can see, the mpeg4 compression looks pretty good)

Totally depends what you are doing with them. if you are putting online then compress away, if you are doing broadcast, usually make them lossless. there are hundreds of variations…

Nah…its best to work in image sequences till you render. that way, if there are errant frames, they can be replaced. also, image sequences will scrub faster in the timeline. ALso, you may want to consider using png sequences…less space and no loss in quality.

If the issue is performance, rendering out the image sequences to quicktime WILL help the performance of After Effects…at least it does for me (much faster to scrub through the timeline). Even rendering to QT Animation seems to improve performance for me.

A better way would be to use low rez Proxies until render time (and of course to keep the audio tracks muted until you need them)
