What would you want in a custom brush library for watercolor?

#1

Good morning, everyone,

If you were creating a custom brush library specifically for watercolor (including both watercolor-layer watercolor and digital watercolor) what would you include?

I got Painter X especially to try computer-based watercolor painting. I have downloaded and installed quite a number of user-created watercolor brushes and collections–from sandman, tlbtlb, kaburaya, Karen Bonaker, David Nagel, a whole bunch from Jin Brown’s site including brushes by Jin herself and brushes by others, and more besides these. I’m starting to think I should be organizing them into their own library instead of just dumping them into the Painter default library.

But as I understand it you can only have one library loaded at a time, so if there were a brush or brushes in the default library that you wanted to have within easy reach, you would would have to copy those to your custom library. I don’t want to be cut off from Painter’s own watercolor and digital watercolor variants, so I’m going to copy over every last one of these. That one’s a no-brainer, but then the decisions start to get harder. Watercolorists don’t just use brushes, they also often use pencils for the light guide strokes, and sometimes pens if they want to work on comic- or anime-style pen drawings and then colorize them with watercolor. There’s sponges. And inks; Liquid Ink can be very watercolor-like and good for washes, and it works nicely for coloring the lines of line art before you paint over (or under) them. And there’s bound to be other stuff it would be good to have that I just don’t know about yet.

You see what I’m fishing for here. If you have a special interest in watercolor (or even if you don’t, but do use it sometimes) what ELSE do you find yourself using often when you’re doing a watercolor painting, that you wouldn’t want to forget and leave behind in an inaccessible brush library if you had a specially-for-watercolor brush library open?

Thanks very much for anyone’s input!

Jim
