What would you like in a photoshop only tutorial DVD?

So what Im seeing so far is color profiles and workflows. Also a big push for compositional theory and a little about some color theory?

On color profiles, do you want me to go so far as to work in something like log or just discuss the differences in color setups based on the base footage?

As a side not I almost failed to graduate on time because my last teacher was not big on me being a matte painter instead of doing computer animation… ehh… oh wel.

Sounds like the struggle im expecting to face over the next 9 months… :frowning:

But yea as far as the dvd goes, i recon its up to you whether to work in log but definitely would be good to see a tutorial that covers colour space in depth. If you feel there would be an advantage to working in log whilst explaining that stuff then yea go ahead

You don’t tend to use it for TV work but with feature work it becomes a necessity, you literally have to switch between the two all the time. From an artist point of view im not too up on the techincal side of it, but i’ve become familiar with why and how it’s used. Pretty much all the plates are delivered to you in LOG space so you have to work to this, but then this is showing the colours in the high range, so you have to preview it in LIN to make sure u accomodate for the detail in this space … hmm, its simple to do but hard to explain

I’ll see if i can get a more detailed explaination.

Dave.

I got a green light for the tutorial DVD and we will be shooting for release 1st quarter of '09. If you have anymore thoughts now is the time.

I am thinking of leaving the Army and going freelance as a photographer. I was going to specialise in plate photography. Going on set and taking plate shots or going with location scout and shooting plates there. I did not know about log spacing. So this will stop me looking like an idiot turning up for a shoot.

Yea this sounds really cool.

Rich usually the vfx supervisor does the plate photography on set, unless its massive then they have a number of people doing it.

As for the DVD the theme of the matte we will be researching will be based in the realm of sci fi to make it different from what has been done in the past with Gnomon. Also because I may be falling under NDA soon, I don’t want to jynx it but I am currently in talks with a well known studio about my first involvement with a feature so I may have to do a totally different them what my film work will be doing.

I will discuss log and lin color spaces as well as show how to setup a soft proof to toggle between both. I will also briefly discuss using HDR to get a great sky plate. To a certain extent we may discuss embedded 3d in PS extended. Video may be implemented but I doubt it. We will also be releasing this with a series of other titles based on CS4 so the DVD may focus on the benefits of what CS4 may offer to the art.

I will be submitting an outline by the end of the week so your input beyond the current info would be great if added soon. We will also discuss composition and color theory but not too much, there are enough resources on that online.

Yep Cliff you are right. I got an email from someone in the Biz telling me to look at photogammetry. I did and my jaw dropped. Now there is another new challenge for me to have a go at. Cheers Cliff.

Looks like I will have to hold off my cv for the MILL LOL
