Hello there, sorta an inane question here.
For the last three and a half years I have worked on an Asus VG248 but I have begun to feel really confined by the small screen space and resolution when texture painting, the wonky colours that I have been wholly unable to calibrate, a weird high contrast ghosting effect across the whole screen when panning or rotating in any application, so on an so forth.
It is a damn fine monitor for gaming (sans the flipping ghosting thing) but I want to take the plunge into 4K or Ultra Wide. The problem is that I have never even seen a real 4K outside of very large TVs at Walmart so I am not sure if it will make all that difference when working. Be it in Maya, Zbrush, or Substance Painter. On the other hand the higher resolution could potentially make it that much easier to examine 4K-8K textures without zooming in all the way.
What is your experience in this area?
On the flip side are Ultrawides! I actually do have some experience with one where I put two copies of Blender side by side and found that both, slightly squashed, were more than usable. I could see myself having either Zbrush and Maya or Maya and Substance Painter on the same screen with full screening just a CTRL-UpArrow away. The problem is that I cannot find an Ultrawide with 1440p that is not curved. Some less than others but they all appear to be curved. Is this really a big a problem as people say or is it only on the “more” curved ones that this becomes a problem in a production environment where straight lines are distorted?
My price range is 1000CAD and while 10bit colour is not mandatory it would be nice as I do “some” work in Photoshop and the colour banding annoys the hell out of me.
The two monitors that have caught my eye while sifting are the 4K BenQ BL Series BL3201PH and the Ultrawide LG 34UM88-P 34" FreeSync IPS LED Monitor which seems to have little if any curve but I am still wary.
