What is your production workflow like?

I’ve just finished (or about to) using Vue 7 to create the opening sequence for a feature film I’ve been working on. At first we were going to do everything in Lightwave and use HD Instance for trees etc…, but when we looked at the ecosystems and fractals in Vue, we decided we should intergrate it into our pipeline.

Its been a real love hate relationship with the program ever since! There are still many bugs, open GL related, ecosystem issues and of course the flickering. But the worst problem has been the compositing options. No ‘black hole’ mattes, ecosystem masks that don’t render and odd square artifacting on the multi-pass outputs. Coupled with the astonishing render times its been a battle to say the least!

I’m wondering what the experiences of others who have used Vue in Production are and how you got round the various issues it throws at you?

…but from a Maya / xStream perspective, this program (Vue 7) is not fit or ready for production at all.

Even the standalone program, Vue Infinite, is buggy, unstable, and generally falls apart randomly, no matter how much RAM we’re using.

If possible, stick to the Lightwave HD instancing for your environments, and perhaps just use Vue’s cloud and atmospheres in post-production / compositing?

Vue isn’t unstable on the PC, but seems to be on the mac.
What’s a black hole matte?

How long are the render times?

Thanks,
