What is the purpose of this functionality? (redundant/duplicate options) [SOLVED]

IIRC I don’t think there’s any difference between those settings.

I don’t have C4D on my machine to check but I seem to remember they produce the same outcome. Not sure why so maybe someone else can help you?

In Surface mode the clones will be spread on the surface. In Volume Mode the surface option will internally create the clone son the surface, but then translates them into the volume along the normal of the surface. This way the volume gives you a better representation of the surface, without beeing as flat as a pure surface distribution.
