What happens when you're hired ? Legal and general queries for contract and freelance work

#1

Hi !

I’ve only done small jobs/commissions as I’m just starting, and I’m wondering what happens when you’re hired for a period of time with a contract or when you do a larger freelance work.

How do you get paid for a freelance work, usually done from home ? Do you just PayPal Invoice, send them your bank account number or something ?

How does a contracted employment works ?

How much does living in a different country then the employers affect you legally ? I’m assuming you have to sort out taxes according to the laws of your country of residency, after getting paid.

Do you need any documents or legal papers to get paid ?

Thank you !

One thing to consider up front is that for contracts at a VFX, AAA games or animation studios you won’t be allowed to work from home for security reasons.
All work must be done within and never leave the physical walls of the studio. There are very few exceptions to this with extreme security clearance but likely none of whom normally would be artists…
This is why CGI artists tend to be nomadic.
