Vue vs 3ds Max

#1

Hi

Just wondering how good VUE 6 Esprit is?

Compared to the likes of 3DS MAX…quality of renders, ease of use etc etc…

Particularly interested in VUE becuase of its easy intergration with Poser…

Anyone have any opinions of it?

Thanks

Try both alright?

You can´t really compare these two!

Max is an outgrown allround 3D modeling and animation app.

Vue is specialized for environment rendering like landscapes, skies, clouds, trees etc. It has compared to max very limited modeling capabilities. And the render engine is far less powerful than Mental Ray or Vray.
(Did you compare the prices?)

Nevertheless Vue Extreme is build to work together with apps like Max or Maya, because setting up landscapes, skies, huge amounts of trees etc. is much easier and faster done in Vue.

If you are a beginner you will be much faster in getting started setting up some nice scenes in Poser (people) and Vue (landscape). But you will have to rely on pre-made content.

Otherwise if you want to learn modeling and try to build everything from scratch yourself than 3Ds Max would be the better choice.

Considering the price you should have a look at Softimage XSI. The Foundation package is also very well rounded as a modeling and rendering tool (Mental Ray), and it´s compared to Max much less expensive.

Download the Vue PLE (Personal Learning Edition). It’s free, never expires, you can save and render. The only thing is you can not share files and the renders have a watermark on them. It’s a great way to see if Vue and you are a good match.

Thats fantastic Manfred, very helpful.

I dont intend to model anything as i`m happy to buy ready made content and there is alot of free content out there aswell.

I would mainly be doing interior pics…would VUE be ok for that aswell?

Thanks again

Excellent

Thankyou very much for the link

I`ll download that now

Every program is capable for any user to model the same thing no matter what. It just take knowledge, that is why I said try both. I use Maya 7 rather than 3D max, and I know how to use by myself. A skilled Wings3D users would pwn a group of noob that is unskilled. There is a lot of freeware and shareware. Go ask a pro modeler about which program are the most powerful, the answer is none. It the users. I hate seeing comparison, but oh well.

Forgot to mention - Esprit is on sale for $99 until March 1st if you have Poser (you need the Poser serial number to order). So, if you do decide to get it, now’s the time!

Thats right!

I tried the demo of Easel last night as was very impressed, especially by the speed of rendering.

Thanks for that

One thing I loved about Vue 6 Inf when I first got it was that I could create great scenes almost right away with out having to struggle with a leaning curve shaped like a mountain. It’s like play now, learn later!

You can do modelling in Vue using primitives, booleans, metablobs etc, which on a basic level enables you to create all sorts of things.

Vue handles interior scenes very well. It also works very well with poser imports (most of the time) with out the need for any 3rd party plugins, although I recommend you take a look at skinvue!

I’ve only worked with vue inf and extreme, so I’m not too sure what the other versions lack in terms of features.

Vue can’t be compared to max, as it is a completely different animal, but it is a very powerful application.

not totally true… some programs are better for things than others – maya and some parts of rhino are great at subdivision and nurbs modelling – max – i wouldn’t come near it for those purposes – cinema4d – is somewhat nurbs friendly but you can’t import and export nurbs objects. rhino is great for ultra accuracy and has vray but its better left for mastercam projects i think. cinema4d is the easiest to pick up and learn and ports very easily into other programs but advanced render blows in comparison to mental ray (but again it does have vray and the sketch and toon renderer is pretty powerful). max i’ve found to be a cumbersome messy program thats UI was very poorly designed (or they just kept adding to it without making significant changes to its layout). in fact, i can’t really think of anything benefits max has other than having the title of the industry standard for architecture.

i tried modelling some simple objects in vue but gave up cuz the opengl was so atrocious and toolkit was pathetic.

May I ask why Vray is more powerful than Mental ray? Take a look at mental ray scenes on google. Vray is just easier, and it has Vray proxy. Mental ray can render just as good as Vray if the setting is right. Max and Maya are the same, they can do pretty much the same thing since they’re owned by Alias and Autodesk.

See Maya do have architecture purpose -Link 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CIvHAGnhA0 and -Link 2:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUXfSIs8ISk.

As for the UI, you just gotta get used to it, I used Maya and people complain of too many button, but I say to them, so who cares? You can learn to use it.

Any program is capable of doing something. Even crappy program are capable of doing something great. Zmodeler is one example, some people used zmodeler and they can make car. Google Sketchup is another example, you’ll find some good work in it, while you’ll see crappy one. Carcad is not really crappy, but I’ll just say that carcad are for modeling object with precision.

The best program is what you’re comfortable with. The best renderer is what you like.

BTW, if you’re going to flame me about this, you can do so with PM.

I don’t think I ever said Vray was better than mental ray. Vray is nice because you don’t have to spend as much time tweaking the settings though. It has the “make pretty” buttons.

Now sketchup… model me a sphere in sketchup. And tell me what that program can do.
No but seriously the big problem with that program is its a black hole of data. But, it is great for building boxes… quickly. It turns everything into a mesh. I’m just saying certain programs have certain advantages. I personally like modelling out of archicad, cleaning things up in cinema4d, and rendering out of maya mental ray or cinema4d vray.

judging from what youve said you are going to be using the 3d program for (interiors, with premade models), it seems obvious to me that you would want 3ds max (or a similar program) instead of Vue.

They really dont serve the same purpose. Vue is for landscapes (although it can be used for interiors, underwater scenes, ect) - its main purpose is for large landscapes with poly counts other programs cant handle.

vue supports mental ray for rendering IF YOU USE IT WITH ANOTHER PROGRAM like max or maya. If you are just getting vue, you will be using thebuilt in vue rendering. However, if you get max, you can use vray, mental ray, and whatever else. Not to mention you will have a lot more direct control over your lighting and how you interior scene looks.

basically, for what you said you will be doing, you dont want vue, you want max (or a similar program like maya)
