Vray SSS Render Element with Diffuse

#1

Hi again

I would like to render an object that has SSS. I have a diffuse map and sub surface map plugged in and my diffuse amount is set to 0.

But when I render my passes, my diffuse and lighting are black and my SSS pass is full, obviously because I set diffuse to 0.

So I set diffuse to 1 which makes the diffuse and lighting pass normal, but the SSS is now black.

I don’t want to set the number anywhere inbetween 0 and 1 because then either the diffuse or SSS will not be showing it’s true 100% value.

So my question is, how can I render a full value SSS pass while not affecting any of my other passes?

Thanks! :applause:

Hi

I know what your trying to do sounds right but thats not the way SSS works.

Diffuse is the surface colour and light bounce, where as SSS is the light going through the “diffuse” layer and bouncing around the inside of the object.
Think of it like reflection and diffuse. The more reflective an object the less the diffuse colour will show through.
If you really want both layers you may have to render separate passes and comp them after.

Hi

You are not understanding me.

I fully understand what you said, BUT when I add a diffuse pass and sss pass, one of them will be black depending on the “Diffuse Amount” value in the SSS material. OR I can have them both at half their strength by putting the value to 50%.

But a diffuse pass should ALWAYS come out at 100%, irrespective of other material settings.

So what must I do to get a 100% diffuse PASS and a 100% SSS PASS, even if the beauty pass has a blend between the two?
