Vray Hot Metal Shader

#1

Ive been expermenting with a few ways to create a hot metal shader for a logo I have been working on and have not been able to come up with something I am happy with. So I am looking for some insight on the best way about creating it. First off I am using Maya 2012 along with Vray 2.0. I would like to create a hot metal shader that would use Vrays light material along with some other materials to give it the apperance that its scratched shiny metal along with some flaking that will allow the “hot metal” to show up and glow through. I have been working with a blending material to try and achive this. Is this the best method for this? Or is there a better way? I have included a mock up of what the logo should look like.

Show some current renders instead por favor.

I am still in the process of making this shader so if I had some current renders I would post them, however I am still expermenting and looking for help in creating this…lol

Exactly…post some of your “experiments” and you might get some people in here to help guide you along the way.

If you would rather us guide you by text, my only advice would be to open the VRay manual and look into the Blend Material.

Here are a couple renders, I think I have the “Vray Lt” material figured out and I am using a blend material to blend the “hot metal” with the steel material. However my steel is laking in being shiny at all, would a reflection map and a glossiness map help imporve the overall effect of the realism of this item?

it doesnt seem to be illuminating anything, i dont have maya here but im sure in the vray lightmtl there is a checkbox that regulates does the shader actualy cast light, try that, and try two vray mtl shaders with a black difuse color to control your reflections. one for the metal and one for the fire mtl if you want it , and use masks to seperate them.

and why did you change the shape in post? your model should be like your final logo, the s should be modeled around the circle, this could affect your lighting and make it look more realistic.

The first two renders are just the “S” what your seeing in the background is my reference image thats. The last image is a export out of the “Vray Frame Buffer” where the first two are out of the Maya Frame Buffer. Also the Light Material seems to be putting off some light however I have its intensity rather low. Ill have to double check my set up and make sure I have everything in order. Thanks for the reply.

are your texture nodes gamma corected?

I am not sure if they are gamma corrected or not to be honest how do I check and what am I looking for?
