Vray for Maya Vs Mental Ray for Maya

#1

Hello Folks,
I Have been using mental ray and vray for maya for sometime ,
I understand that I am only scratching the surface right now,
But planning to pick one and specialize into that.
Since i dont have much of a production Experience in this,
Would love to hear your opinion on which one is worth putting all the Jedi efforts and learning

I do understand that not many studios are using Vray at this point but I am sure this will change sooner or later Or something might come completely new .

Thank you in advance for the inputs
Y

I used Vray with 3ds for a bit, but I’ve since switched to mental ray.
I upgraded 3dsmax and not vray, because I was using mental ray with maya at work anyway.
MR is everywhere, so imo its worth learning, at least first, there is no reason not to learn both.

Just pick Vray and forget about mental. I’m telling it to you after years of using both. Mental will let you down in the most important moment. Sorry…

Thank you for Mr3Dguy and mister3D…

I would like to hear more on this from some more people…

I have used both on a smaller scale in which I found Vray takes more time in general compare to mentalray , that’s right it all depends on the settings we use as well.

Mister3D what kind of projects did you have this issue, any input to help me solve this issue is greatly appreciated, I am sure have some great experiences with this.
Thank you
Y

There’s another thread I cannot seem to find where this has been covered already. . .many MANY times. It’s well thought out and no flame wars.

Run a search on here. These comparisons are constant. Always surprises me no one searches first. . . .

Thank you for the Pointer…
Yes I should have searched …
But found the one which I guess is the same one you might have in mind…
cheers
