Volunteer Lawyers for Artists

#1

I was doing a little research and came across this site. It looks to be a good resource for artists that cannot afford attornies. This could be a huge help with copyright issues as well as contracts and stuff

Why would a starving artist needs a lawyer?

If his/her art worth anything of a market value, he wouldn’t be starving. Or, would he/she?

rarely do artist know how to negotiate their value. More important is what to do when someone steals your work or if you need help with contracts. Many artists cannot afford $150-$300 p/hr for an atttorney to help protect them. If you have to asks then you probably have no need or have not really experienced the real world of business between creatives and suits. I am assuming you have not delt with royalities or distribution of your work in multiple forms of distribution. I would have like consultation in the past and I do plan to use them in the future. I figured others can as well.

Whether starving or successful, all artists could use a good lawyer. If you’re starving, and you get screwed out of what you’re owed by the client, that money is your month’s rent, food, utility bills—it will hurt like hell. An attorney could ease that pain for you. If you’re successful and get screwed over, then what you’re owed is a much larger sum of money, and whether you need that money or not, it’s still a large chunk of change. Then we have copyright/trademark issues, which both types of artists need protection for.

Unfortunately this list is only for the U.S. Is there anything similar in China or other countries anyone would be aware?
