Volumetric Lighting

I’m trying to create a shadow and volumetric light from the same light source, but the volume light seems to be going through the walls.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to get clear shadows and volume light from the same light source without having to use shadow maps to generate the volume light and shadows because when doing large interior spaces, the shadow map is very pixelated. Does anyone have any suggestions for this?
