Volume builder growth conundrum

#1

Hey guys

So I’ve rebuilt my porous implant in volume builder for the flexibility of it all and my client would like to show the porous material having a growth effect on their implant. I’ve gotten only so far in my usual brute force method but I’m stuck on how I can combine fields. What I’ve done is dropped a mesh in a fog volume with a shader field to make the porous overlay. If I can just combine it or have it affected by a linear or spherical field, I can create the growing effect but can’t brain it. I’ve attached shots of my setup. Any ideas are greatly appreciated, as always :).

Quick and dirty would be to add a linear field with the mode set to Subtract. then animate the position of the filed. for a more organic look, you can use a noise field and animate the noise parameters.

Yep, as usual, after posting I figured it out. Adding the linear or spherical field as subtract was a definite factor but it has to be on top of the stack in the volume builder with the Shader Field set to Min. Then change the volume mesher to voxel threshold set to Absolute and tweak that. Then it works as expected :). I originally tried the linear field under the Shader field set to Add. Posting here a lot of times is the equivalent to talking out loud to myself, but it’s always fun to get 2-3 different approaches to a situation.

My first thought was that you didn’t know how to setup a procedural growth effect like this
