Hi.
This is a method of UV unwrapping that I learned back while I used LightWave and that I’ve continued through into modo (albeit in conjunction with it’s auto unwrap tools nowadays). It’s handy for unwrapping things that the UV tools don’t handle too well or if you’re looking for more exacting control over the UV unwrap.
