Vertex Normals setting back to default.

I am working on a humanoid/anime face which needs to be rendered in toon shader. For the anime like shadows(shadow around the nose only), I am using a sphere to modify the vertex normal. The model is low poly(since my computer is pretty old), and when I try to render it with approximation or smooth preview in mental ray, the vertex normal go back to default position and there is no change in the shading. Is there any way to propagate modified vertex normal to smooth preview?
