Vanishing point and the like

I have been for a while now trying to figure out how I can draw a straight line in PS cs so I can mark vanishing points. I find it really hard to paint cities or buildings without a guidline. I have tried to do it with the paint brush freehand but that was only half seriouse and doesnt work so well as you know. I have also tried the pen tool but I cant figure how exactly that works. Is ther another tool for drawing straight lines I have over looked. Should i just use a straight edge on my tablet? How do yall do the lines for vanish points in Photoshop CS?

I use the Line Tool for this. If you don’t know where it is, just press the u key and it will put you in the location on the tool bar. It’s in the tool cluster next to the Pen Tool. You can adjust the thickness as well.

when i want perspective lines i usually draw them free hand (especially for roughs or starting off), and i know you might be thinking thats not possible, but with a little practice you can draw accurate and straight lines just by making the stroke with your shoulder instead of your wrist or elbow. i would then touch it up much later on using the line tool if necessary, i dont start with the line tool as its less intutitive and takes longer.

heres an example- all the lines in this image are freehand and were drawn on an intuos 2 a4 oversize, although i us.ed corel painter 9.5 you would get exactly the same results in photo shop.

doing it this way saves time when really you wont use every idea or finsh them so its a quick way to knock out perspective grids…

if you still find it hard to get your head around this… let me know i might be able to whip up a video tutorial

all the best

I’ve had trouble doing this also, best way I could find was to use a small paint brush and use shift to draw a straight line (draw a spot at the vanishing point, press shift and click somewhere else and it does a straight line). I’ve tried looking for a plug in to do this kinda thing but no luck (apart from the CS2 vanishing point one, but that’s more for editing pictures while keeping perspective from the looks of things, not actually tried it tho, maybe it’s possible to use it as a VP line tool?).

some grids that I used when I started.

It’s even simpler than that. Using whatever tool you want to use, brush, pen, whatever. Click once on the page where you want the line to start. Yes, you’ll make a dot. Then hold down shift and click where you want the line to end. This will create a straight line between the two points. Unless you’re using a Mac, in which case i don’t know what the key is, but there’s bound to be one.
