Value studies

#1

I’m doing more and more speed paints lately, trying to improve composition and value skills. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I looked at some videos at Feng Zhu website and tried to utilize those tips in my speed paints.

I think I start to get better at this. Sketched this during my lunch break and want to make this into a painting:

Some progress. But I feel like I’m making it worse by putting more detail and I’m loosing or putting wrong values here…

These types of value studies are fairly easy, since they don’t involve the more challenging aspect of juggling critical aesthetic judgment along with accurate depiction of form and lighting. You can be off by quite a bit and it won’t affect the way your image reads.

We’re still two weeks away from starting the workshop, and I can tell you’re getting antsy waiting for it to start. In week three, you’ll be given an assignment that really pushes your ability to make critical judgment in how you manage values. It’s one of the hardest assignments in the workshop, and most students get their asses kicked by it–but they learn so much from the assignment. (For those of you that have no idea what I’m talking about, Dennis just enrolled in my workshop recently–the one linked below in my signature).

That’s what I thought… I’m pretty sure that I’m off with my values by a lot. The goal is to get them right though =)

And yes… I can’t wait for the workshop to start =)
