UV Map question...

Ok, So you bring in a low poly model with UV’s already laid out in maya/max and then you start subdividing and adding detail… whats the best option people go for to then get a high detail uv map that shows all this extra detail - as far as I can see there is no option inside of mudbox to export a uv map. Do you all just import the high res into maya/max and grab the uv map that way? Seems a little harsh given maya/max might have difficulties with the mesh density.

Until someone provides some light, I’ll step down a few subd layers export - and then import into maya and grab the uv map and work from that. Shouldn’t need the most detailed map but obv the lower res uv map is useless for painting in the details sculpted in mudbox.

I think you’re asking how to generate/export a displacement map?

Utilities > Texture Baking > New Operation, then select the low res mesh, high res mesh and select your settings.

Hey PaulAdams,

Nope - not a displacement map… the uv map with the wireframe so that you can for example start painting in skin detail - texture map.

#4

Ah right. Mudbox can’t do that as far as I know. I’d tend to do that in Maya, which seems to be stable enough with a 400k mesh. If you need to go higher, perhaps Zbrush could do it.

#5

Yup as I thought - guess we’ll have to see what happens with Mudbox 2

I’m sure they didn’t include this option because it’s not really of much use in most cases, when you can just bake out a normal map and use that a a guide for where the high res details are.
I’ve never been in a situation where having a high res UV map would have been of use, and very high res UV maps just look like a solid lump anyway except at massive resolutions.

Yeah but then how do you paint in nuckles bashes and scars etc on a low poly uv map? You just dont know where the detail sits. What I ended up doing is taking a mid level resolution version of the model, imported it into 3d app and exported a uv map - this way I have enough detail in the map to see where I need to lay things out… just think this is an option mudbox should consider for the next release.

The next release is suppose to have 3D painting.
