URGENT Help with Baking and/or rendering...

#1

Hey guys. I’m fairly new to blender.
I’m working on a project that’s due in less than ten days, and I am absolutely stumped. I have searched hundreds of forums and youtube tutorials, and nothing is answering my question without piling more problems on top of the other >.> its frustrating…

I was given some 3D models to import into Blender for me to animate with. They were originally STEP files, but I managed to convert them into .STL. I have finished animating and applied all the lighting and textures into my scene. But the render time is absolutely ridiculous… even the baking is struggling.

One of the methods I read about in terms of reducing render time was to bake all my models with the materials on them. So I do just that - I select edit mode, hit “A” to select all the models vertices and what not, UV Unwrap it, set it to 1024x1024, then hit bake. From what I have seen, it should bake within an instant. A few seconds at most. But the timer up the top says that it will take hours to complete - nearing on a whole day. I honestly don’t know what the hell I am doing wrong. How can I reduce the baking time without sacrificing the quality of the model?

I’ll provide a screen shot, to provide more insight if need be:

The scene looks very light at 17,963 vertices… I normally bake from 500,000 to Millions of vertices.
However, when baking… I usually use Blender Internal (onto a lower-res mesh).

Assuming 17k verts is the size of the whole scene, have you tried perhaps making a new file and just appending these objects into the new file?

I don’t see anything that should cause renders to go into the many-hours mark.
