Unwrapping help 3ds max

#1

Right, I’m a bit lost with how to start with unwrapping my spaceship. The ship is made up of multiple objects of which some intersect the main hull.

Is there a way to have the entire model unwrapped onto a single texture sheet? or would I have to unwrap each object individually and have a separate sheet for each part?

I have a basic knowledge of unwrapping, but I have never unwrapped anything as complicated as this before with the aim of all objects being on a single sheet, and i dont really know how or where to start. I have searched google for any help but nothing really seems to answer my questions.

I am working in 3ds max 2012. Any help would be great, thanks

Yeah you can definitely have all of your UV’s on one texture sheet.

Since you have multiple objects, what I would do is unwrap each object individually.

Once you’re done laying out the UV’s on all of your objects, select everything and apply a new unwrapUVW modifier. You can then see all of your objects you have unwrapped in the UVW editor, and arrange each objects UV’s within the 0-1 space however you please.

This ship consists of many parts. I would approach unwrapping it not on a single map. Because at some point if I decide to change the color of any of the textures it’s always been easier to modify smaller textures instead of a huge sheet that consists of many layers.
