Unwrap a texture with two halves??

#1

Hey guys.

This is something that keeps coming back to me when it comes to textures, not sure what I am doing wrong…
In this case I unwrap a texture on a viking helmet that I made previously, what I wonder is why aren’t two halves the exact same size? I like to unwrap half a model and then overlay the backside and the frontside so that a texture fits both backside and frontside.

Here’s a picture beneath, now if I choose one side and highlight it and put it over the other side; the fit will not be 100%; why is that?

Shouldn’t the texture fit exactly when the two halves are exactly the same size?

Unwrap starts at some face and proceedes through neighboring faces taking into consideration either face area or angles. Even if two parts are exactly the same there is no guarantee it will start in the same place.

Does that mean that it is impossible to get a 100% match in the unwrap process?

Thanks for your help dac77, you are very helpful here in the blender section.

I never tried that, so do not know. Maybe you will find this method. With lowpoly maybe doing it by hand would be practical or try exploring other method of unwrapping which are in the unwrap menu.

I guess that depends on whether your helmet is perfectly symmetrical or not. You get that with the mirror modifier. In that case, you should get UVs on top of each other … but exactly the same. If your texturing is the same for both sides (which is unrealistic) then you should be okay in no time else … you might want to move things around a bit.

I’m an ardent “learner” … I might be wrong[/size]

In this case it was for this viking helmet I did yesterday, usually I do the model in half then apply unwrap from project view with bounds. In this case however I wanted a better seam, which I made after a lot of tweaking though.
Smart project is pretty good but an un-necessary process if almost everything is gonna be the same material.

thanks again guys.
