Unrolling paper effect

Hi,
Does anyone remember how to do the unrolling paper effect using deformations. I remember someone explained how to do this on the EI mailing list many years ago. I think it was a combination of shear and bend deformations. Been trying to get the right mix but can’t seem to get it right.

Just following his example, I was able to roll up a uber shape plane pretty easy…

I’ve managed to get it working somewhat. Need to see if I can improve it and I’ll post a sample project.

I’ve uploaded a sample unroll project. It’s a bit rough but gives a general idea of how the deformations work. The paper unrolls and becomes a terrain (it uses v6.5 shader Noise Factory). File size 2.8MB

You got it right. Nice effect. Funny, I had to use that same trick last month to unroll the tar paper on a flat roof. The original trick can be found on the EIAS 2.9 CD: Techniques Demos - Animating Deforms Demos - Paper Roll Anim Project.

Ah! The EIAS 2.9 CD. That’s where it was. I did the effect once for a project several years ago but wasn’t sure where I had learned the technique. Thanks.
