Unreal game development

#1

I am looking to create a game using the unreal tournament 2004 engine however, I have never developed a game before. If some one could point me towards some on line resources to get me started that would be awsome. I also can not find where to download the engine. any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can create a mod using Unreal Tournament 2004. You have to buy the game, though. If you want to create your own game with the engine and sell it, you have to license the engine which costs $350,000+. I would stick to buying the game and modding it. Check out 3DBuzz for many video tutorials as well as a community full of people that can help.

the engine is by far not free for any commercial use, it is also not meant to make freeware games or the like on, or opensource or garage game type of thing
the engine itself can be found and downloaded here : http://udn.epicgames.com/Two/UnrealEngine2Runtime

however, it might be simpler and more flexible for you if you just make a mod instead of a “game” using UT2004 itself…

there are various video tutorials at http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/unr_main.php
also www.leveldesigner.com www.wiki.beyondunreal.com and the official UDN network www.udn.epicgames.com might be usefull

if i create a mod to what extent will i be able to modify the game will it still be recognizable as unreal tournament 2004 or can i create something unique. and if not what games are open that will on both mac and pc.

#5

You can make it into anything you can imagine. There is a golf mod among others.

#6

you would be able to make almost look like a new game then
completely unique
people have been making rally race mods, sidescrollers, top down shooters, 3rd person abstract adventure games, etc etc in the past years with ut2003-4
pretty unique things so its surely possible

and ut2004 and thus all mods for it should support linux and mac

buy the unreal 2004 special edition which comes with 2 dvds - the game (which would otherwise come on a gargantuan 6 cds) and a bonus dvd with dozens of video tutorials on exactly what you are interested in. I would strongly recommend it as a starting point.

Also, anyone know if DE gives you the full source code to the game if buy a liscence?? That would be really cool. Once I save up $346,000 more dollars, im soooo buying it.

It is Epic who you would license the engine from and yes you would get the full source code.

#11

ahh. Epic. I knew that =)

You can read all about licensing the engine here.
