Unreal Engine 3, Who What and Where

#1

Im just wondering if there is some kind of online brochure for the unreal engine 2 or 3 just out of curiousity because sumbody told me that the new UT 3 engine would cost 350,000 US :argh:

does anyone know if this is true ?

yes and its my guess the price is going to go up soon or already went up for the new engine
and you have to pay extra for every other platform you work for, ps2 gamecube pc etc

http://udn.epicgames.com/
there you can find info and specifications, altho it doesnt load for me right now

Also, you could try

www.unrealtechnology.com

if you haven’t already for some decent specs. Personally I recon the price will be more 500,000 USD, plus not sure about royalties. But remember it’ll be cheaper for non-commercial projects I guess and if you want the physics SDK they’re using its FREE and one of the best I’ve seen (check out www.novodex.com)

Also, remember that the technologies they’re using (realtime HDRI, spherical harmonics, etc) will be used by all engines soon, so hold on tight for some interesting engines …

Hope this helps?

Oh, just found the licensing costs/terms for the current engine (Unreal 2), which is currently at 350k. Thought it might be of help …

"The following licensing plans available for Unreal Engine 2:

Royalty-Bearing License - For retail console & PC products

A non-refundable, non-recoupable license fee is due on execution of the agreement. The cost is US $350,000 for one of the available Unreal Engine 2 platforms, plus US $50,000 for each additional platform. A royalty of 3% is due on all revenue from the game, calculated on the wholesale price of the product minus (for console SKUs) console manufacturer fees. In the case of massive-multiplayer online games, the royalty is also due on the additional forms of revenue including subscriptions and advertisements.

Royalty-Free License - For any products

A non-refundable, non-recoupable license fee paid on execution of agreement: US $750,000 for one of the available platforms, plus US $100,000 for each additional platform. No royalty is due on any revenue from the product."

Expensive, yes? But that’s what you pay for new technology.

Just out of interest have you thought of rolling your own or not? The main thing I like of the UE3 engine is the lighting and this can be done quite easily in a shader if thats your kind of thing? A good paper on that cool lighing (Spherical Harmonics) is here :

[color=White][size=1]Plus I’ve attached a pic of what they achieved - looks like UE3 engine doesn’t it. Also the next DirectX will include this lighting as a PRT module.
