Looking to make a large cube shatter into smaller uniform rigid cubes. Tried manually placing them and letting Ncloth physics handle the rest, but to no avail.

What exactly do you mean by ‘no avail’ ? A singularity in position of your workstation? Maya hit you in the head ?
If you’re doing this with ncloth you’re better of when you combine the cubes into one big cube and in the ncloth - node you tap on the ‘Use polygon shells’.
That said, I’d go with Bullet on this kinda simulation. Ncloth can pull this of somewhat but it can be a bitch to get the attributes right. of course depending on what kind of material your cubes are…
