My word Mathew the light is wonderfull in the worked up version, you call that going backwards! Im inclined to disagree with that!
I dunno a small crit might be your figures tend to be a bit dark all over, i do the same. You might want to consider some skin tones and coloured clothing affected by the light in the closer up shots. Like the way yellow objects are green under water, i struggle with that stuff quite massively. All i know is subtractive mixing determins the reflected light colour, yellow local object + blue light = green local object colour (i think sighs)
If i may ask how do you change the colours when a working on a base?, do you use colour modes like overlay and multiply or just paint streight over the top, whenever i use modes or a hue/sat adjustment things like that the colour tempreture releationships get killed or the saturation gets messed up somehow, ive never really been able to colourize a grayscale and have it still feel natural but you seem to manage big colour changes really well.
