Despite activist claims, DMG (Dark Matter Gravitational) Engines have shown no destructive effects in fourteen years of laboratory studies. Every claim stating that DMG Engines have caused harm, have proven to be false. It is true that some people find being close to the DMG Engines to be nauseating and are easily disoriented, but there has been no record of cell damage. The race circuit slogan “It Pulls You In” can be taken literally. A lot of the spectators you see in the front row at a race are the same people you would see riding in the front car of a roller coaster. While you do feel a change in gravity when the cars pass by, the most g’s ever measured in the stands was insignificant.

Using the latest lab results as leverage, the NRC (Nevada Racing Commission) convinced the FAA to grant approval for higher speeds. With approval to go faster, the NRC will be building a track designed for higher speeds. "This is what the entire race circuit has been waiting for. Since the introduction of the DMG Engine, we have not been able to hold the throttle open for very long and it has seriously restricted track design. The track in Nevada will, without a doubt, bring this circuit to the next level." - Dale Haggard Jr.

While racers and spectators are celebrating the FAA's decision, others continue to claim, "You are messing with the work of god, for racing!" - Paula Tenderson, DMG activist.

25 participants and 3 entries with less than a day to go…
Could a time extension be considered as i posted in the rules section? I understand respecting the time limit is part of the competition, but it might make for a more interesting competition to have more submissions.

I was PM’ed by DevilHacker earlier this week to help judge. Not sure if he got my response, but here’s what I thought either way. Thanks to Jon Jones for giving me some input on this. He’s great at articulating his opinion. Hopefully I didn’t post anything wrong here, still getting accustomed to the setup here.

Orik (1st place)
This vehicle is a clear winner. Great design, edge flow, use of technology, renders and bonus points for the interior. I’d go so far to say this piece is surprisingly well presented.

dan (2nd place)
Great concept! Really like the basic idea, very Solsticey, and especially like the headlights. While I like them, the chunky rims really throw off this design of the overall vehicle. The noticeable edges and held back shineyness are the only things keeping this piece down.

Invention (3rd place)
Nice overall silhouette, catchy design. The presentation (render) leaves a bit to be desired on this piece. The edge flow and vertex distribution is a bit clunky, which throws off the lighting.

Additional comments on other entries (in no particular order):

wtbl
I like the seats and the white iPoddy thing you have going on, but overall, the wonky, weird design throws this one off. Great renders though!

MVP
This is a cute idea with the transformation, but a little too goofy.

somnambulance
I like the racing stickers and concept, but it feels more like a small barge than a racer.

ghostscape
Interesting dragonfly/bug looking vehicle, but doesn’t really meet the shiny or sexy guidelines.

Caccaduu
Unique design, fantastic shiny metal and reflection on the flame-painted parts, but the ball in the front is both the biggest and the ugliest part of the whole piece.

Great turnout everyone! You all made this one a much tougher job deciding!

#12

funny that, I got the same pm :stuck_out_tongue: hehe

here goes though. some excellent entries this time round, good to see that.
I am in complete agreance (sp) with Chris here as to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place

1st Place : Orik
if ever there was a shiney and sexy vehicle, this would be it. I totally love how it has all these sexy curves combined with some hard edges (which are all the rage in automotive design imo) the glowing edges + two-tone carpaint nail this one home for 1st place

2nd Place : dan
the concepts are Ace, nothing less of stunning and that’s why it’s a second place, for me I would have rather seen you stick closer to the concepts on this one with the sleek taillights as opposed to the single center one below the spoiler for instance. And with deviating from the concept the car became slightly more common day and less sexy. Great entry though don’t get me wrong.

3rd Place : Invention
While certainly shiny and sexy with a nice profile, it reminds me to much of a lamborghini.
also, it has some harder corners that I’d rather have seen smooth. but that could be a matter of personal taste.

Additional Comments (in Alphabetical Order)

Caccaduu
Interesting concept for sure, though as Chris said, the ball is a major turn-of when it comes to sexyness. The shader is excellent but the texture is not really my taste. In my opinion, sexy & shiny don’t go hand in hand with flames.

Ghostscape
while it’s and interesting vehicle (getting some Halflife 2 vibes here) sexy and shiney are indeed 2 things this entry are not. sorry

MVP
Interesting angle with the transformation for multiterrain usabillity, but I wouldn’t want to be piloting that thing … it looks as if the transform part (the wheelthing) might break of to easily) and again, flames are not my thing.

somnambulance
Nice to see a new take on classic racecar designs, but the front engineparts could really use some smoother design to up the sexyness. the boxyness of them just doesn’t work for this.
Also, imo bright blue with neongreen are not a good combo.

wybl
Digging the colorcombo (that shade of red is amongst my favourite colors, so bonuspoint for you  ) and the carbonfiber is allway sweet, but it could have used a sleeker design. As with Somn’s entry, the boxyness of the engines just don’t do it for me

great entries all though, hope I haven’t come across to hard in my first judging, just calling it as I’m seeing it.

Wybl-futuristic hover craft
This is a nice entry reminds me a bit of a ufo. To make it more sleek I would have worked on the streamline a bit more. This end result is a bit clunky, mainly because of the side-pods. I think the design process would have benefitted from some concept sketches before starting to model. Things that are modelled early on tend to stick in the final model. A better focus on the concept stage will yield some better results I think. If you worked some more on the round ufo like concept you had in the beginning it could have gone the way of supersleek and more futuristic.

The execution of the model and texturing is good, but the model is hard to judge because of the lack of wireframe shots (i had to look in the wip thread, and the pics there didnt show the whole model). The texturing of the cockpit could have been better and the detailing of the outer body could have been a bit more.

MVP - Flying Fish
Nice concept, reminds me of Olimar’s rocket in Pikmin. While certainly on of the more urprising concepts in the compo, it doesnt strike me as being sexy. Its shiny though, a bit too much. Its hard to have a good look at the model because of it, maybe tone down the hdri in the render.
The idea of the big wheel is nice, but it somehow makes the whole thing a bit less sleek. Its good that you took the various conditions (land, sea, air) into consideration, but concentrating a bit more on just one would have given you the opportunity to make the whole thing more sleek. The diffuse map could also use a bit more detail and same goes for
the cockpit.

The high poly version looked really nice, but the low poly model could do with a bit more poly tweaking to get the whole thing more smoothed out. I would have taken ALOT of polies out of the back wheel to put into the wings and side pods for example.

Somnambulance - 2060’s Racing
NGood concept, looks very much like a nascar racer of the future. Strange thing is, the model looks good, except for the main cockpit/chassis. It doesnt have the intensity of the rest of th model, the sidepods and rear wings look very nice and detailed, but the main chassic comes across as cluncky and a bit dull compared to the rest of the model. If the
chassis was more sleek, a bit more elongated for example, and had a bit more of a earodynamic flow it would have come across as begin sexy. I would also take some of the polies used on the back and underside vents of the sidepods to create some geometry on the side of the sidepods. When designing vehicles for a racer, its best to concentrate on the
rear, top and side of the vehicle. Put as little as possible details in the bottom because this is the part you’ll see the least.

Texture wise, I think this concept could have benefitted from being a bit dirty and banged up. Especially considering it would take part in a highly competetive race. Even if it was supposed to be a super shiny vehicle. Also some panels and screws and stuff would have made the texture a bit more interesting.

Ghostscape - shirow
Nice concept, although it looks like it belongs in a different competition. This doesnt come across as either super shiny or sexy. The cockpit in the final render looks like the only shiny part (and the claws) So its hard to consider this entry for points. If it would have been a competition to design a futuristic militairy vehicle it would fit better.
Overall I would say the model is a bit too organic. Which in itself is fine, but it isnt carried throughout the whole model. The main engines and rear tailwings are to angular and mechanic. This makes the model a bit unbalanced. If you look at some helicopter designs by Matsume Shirow, you would see it hardly has any straight lines in the design.

The texture is nice, but you could have taken it a bit further by adding dirt, panel edges, scratches, rivets etc. More Also with this amount of polies you could at least made a suggestion of a cockpit by adding an inside with some silhouetted alpha crossplanes for pilots.

Orik - Rolling hovering super sportcoupé (3 points)
Great design, winner by a mile. This one captures the essence of the competition best. The concept of this car was the strongest througout the competition. You took great advantage of the enviroment map, this really makes this model shine, and super, and sexy. Send this on to audi, alfa or peugeot, and with any luck we’ll be driving in it in the future.
without the hovering part ofcourse. One small crit though, for the final model you could have tweaked the normal map in photoshop so the edges of the normal map wouldnt show up as obviously as they did now. Also I dont know if I would like to sit in a car without being able to look out of the windshield.

Caccaduu - Spherebike (1 point)
Most original design. I like this one very much. the only thing really holds it back is the weird ball at the front. I dont know what it’s for but it definitely distracts from the rest of the model, which is really excellent. Maybe the ball would have been more interesting when it was somekind of metallic machine thing, or just a ball of energy. Or maybe a ball of lava with the glow showing through the cracks.

I would have liked to see a wireframe somewhere along the line. The cockpit/readouts could have used a bit more love though. The handles look a bit bland. Also I think the rider would get some severe burns on his legs if he was to race that thing. Still very sexy though.

dan - Miami Vice Bling bling (2 points)
Very good concept sketch, right out of the automotive industry. While the concept comes across as really sleek, the model seems a bit more clunky. Not that its necessarily a bad thing, but it definitely taked away some of the sexyness.
I think the masculin wheels are the main culprit in this. If the rims would have been more futuristic and sleek, it would add to the total package. Transferring some more polies from the chamfers on the body to the rims would have worked imo. Overall the design takes a lot from the volvo 3cc concept car and aston martin db9 This gives the car a look of something thats somehow familiar. Maybe it could have been closer to the concept, which looked really sexy on its own account.

Invention - Speed Demon
Enzo meets Murcielago, with a rear end of a saleen. While the design takes a lot from these top cars, the end result comes across as a bit unbalanced in my opinion. Some more work on the rear of the car would have made it a bit more interesting. It comes across as being too long and it loses some impact because of this. it looks like the front had more attention while most attetion in race game car models should go to the back of the car. If you look at the rear render of the car, its hard to make out what goes where.

Also the mesh looks a bit messy. If you have more evenly distributed poly glow, it helps the overall look of the model, and enhances the way the shiny maps look on the model. If you have a nice flow to your mesh, it would seem more rounded out and more sleek because of this. The final render could also use some work. More specular and a reflection map would
have made it better to look at. Also the wheels, and especially the rims look like an afterthought.

To recap:
1st place - Orik (3 points)
2st place - dan (2 points)
3rd place - Caccaduu (1 point)

Overall a very good turnout, and compliments to everyone who finished. Sorry if I came across as a bit harsh, I hope my crits help you out in the future. See you all in the next competition!

devilhacker you need to make an edit. i dont think i won this time hehe.

congrats to orik

choose a goodun

#16

guys congratz this was fun looking at. I hope I have some time to maybe enter the next one.

I loved Orik’s car it is soooo sweet, the others are very cool also.

#17

Awesome stuff… the sphereball vehicle concept was my favorite but the modelling just didn’t do the concept justice at all :frowning:

#18

Lol, ya. I loved that model. Defiantly one of the more original entries.
Great job Caccaduu!

Don’t know what you mean about modeling tho’

IMO, the textures really pulled off the entry, after all, a person can only do so much with 6000polys, and a sphere sure does eat them up really fast

#19

Very nice job guys. Congrats to all.

#20

hot work people. well done.
